The Organic God is based on a spiritual journey I took several years ago. I had reached a point in my spiritual journey where I felt flat, disconnected from God. In bed, late at night, I would quietly wonder, Is this all there is? I was just tired of hearing what everyone else said about God and I wanted to know him for myself.

I developed my own game plan. I figured that if I wanted to know God, the best place to go was the Book. (Have you ever noticed how giving someone a book is an invitation to a deeper conversation, a fuller relationship?) I began going through the entire New Testament and sections of the Old Testament and writing down ever verse that revealed something about God.

The things I learned and discovered, well, they make up the background as well as some of the foreground of The Organic God DVD. This study is an intimate portrayal of what it looks like to hunger after God, seek him, hear his voice, and at the end of the day still sit in humble wonder of who he is and what he could possibly do next. It’s about stripping away the things that stand in the way of our relationship with God—removing the additives, the artificial sweeteners, the processed formulas. My hope is that you will find yourself falling in love with God all over again through this study.
I look forward to hearing your insights and your discoveries about God. Please post below! I am excited to interact with you through this blog.

.001 Session 1

1. What did you get out of this particular lesson?

2. Have you ever thought of “organic” in relation to God? What parallels do you see between the word “organic” and “God?”

3. Is there anything about seeking God that makes you uncomfortable? Explain.

.002 Session 2

1. What did you get out of this particular lesson?

2. Margaret says that when she begins to doubt God’s love that there are moments she feels like He whispers through the scriptures, “I love you more than you can ever know.” Think of a time when God revealed his love to you in a very real, personal way. How does God lavish His love on you?

3. In The Organic God, Margaret writes, “In the fullness of his beauty, God invites us to change the way we look at our world. Too often I look for signs of beauty from a bottom-up perspective. I think of beauty in terms of what I prefer or what’s trendy or even what feels good. The bottom-up perspective centers on me and leaves me with blurred vision unable to distinguish true beauty from merely attractive things. The Organic God invites me to take off the bottom-up lenses of this world, and asks me to embrace a top-down perspective of that which is truly beautiful” (page 52).

In what ways are you tempted to look at the world from a “bottom-up” perspective rather than a “top-down” or Godly perspective?

.003 Session 3

1. What did you get out of this particular lesson?

2. The Bible reveals that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. Margaret writes, “We are invited to obtain wisdom—a portion, any amount no matter how small—from his storehouse. As we stare into the depths of wisdom, it enters our hearts, and its presence becomes pleasant and luminous to our soul. Wisdom takes on a life of its own as it grows and comes alive within us, directing us, protecting us, and leading us into the life God intended.” Where do you think most people today get their wisdom from? Why do you think people turn to so many other sources besides God for wisdom?

3. Margaret says that throughout the Bible we see that God speaks through kings and queens, princes and prophets, pilgrim sand paupers. When you think about moments when God spoke in Scripture, what moments come to mind?

.004 Session 4

1. What did you get out of this particular lesson?

2. Have you ever found yourself bruised by an experience in the church? How did you respond? Do you think that you’ve been fully healed and restored in that area?

3. Margaret writes, “No matter what causes the pain to surface, I believe its presence is actually a gift from the God who redeems. The pain acts as a wake-up call that it is time to begin the process of healing, repentance and forgiveness. The pain asks us to make a leap of faith—that no matter what has happened, nothing is beyond God’s redeeming power. He can heal the deepest wounds. He can restore the most messed-up lives. He can reach into the darkest corners of our past and shine his redeeming light.” In what ways, have you found this statement to be true? Are there any areas in your life where the pain is serving as a wake-up call from God?
